Controversial Gospel Musicians in Nigeria

Controversies and debates have often been part of the trends that accompany the social media space especially for celebrities and top ministers. The gospel ministers are not left out in these shades as some of them have often been lashed out at, for either their songs, dressing, videos or social media posts.

Over the years, some music ministers and gospel celebrities have been controversially misinterpreted and this has often raised some debates on social media. We take a look at some artistes that have been involved in controversies in the past.

Tope Alabi: Veteran indigenous singer, Tope Alabi and controversies are like 5 and 6. The singer has often had several debates in the past, which ranges from her dressing, her dances, her music and some of her personal relationship.

Last year she was lashed on social media by some sets of people after the video of her dancing the viral dance called zanku at her father’s burial generated a lot of widespread internet debates. This was followed by another controversial debate about a video where she sang “Oti Jeus npa mi o jare” which means I am intoxicated by the wine of Jesus. She had also been involved in controversies surrounding the use of earrings, the use of slangs and relationships with prophets in the past.

Dabo Williams: Singer, Dabo Williams popularly referred to as Alter Boy has over time generated a lot of talks on the media for his words, his dressings and his songs. There have been several debates in the past about his luxurious dressing styles. Dabo Williams has been known as one of the most fashionable in the industry, owning a collection of outfits and other accessories which have often made his video and lifestyles enviable but at the same time controversial.

His blunt reactions to certain actions among believers and artistes in the music industry has also generated several controversies about him in the past. His style of music has been painted by some as being too extremely away from the conventional gospel but this has often not stopped the singer from declaring his sounds to the savior all the time.

Akuchay: Nigerian-Canadian singer and songwriter Akuchay has in the past generated a lot of widespread social media debates with the recent one coming from the controversy surrounding the use of a half-naked ballet dancer in her musical video, You are God.

This has caught the attention of several bloggers and media influencers including Tunde Ednut and Instablog which generated several debatable reactions from several followers across the world.

Tim Godfrey: The ROX Nation boss has not been left out in the controversial issues as he has suffered a bit of spoilers on the internet. The singer was at a time medially abused after he tinted his hair few years ago with some set believing the singer should have not done that.

The singer was also attacked few times when he had collaborations with secular artiste such as Skales, Oxlade and many others.

Frank Edwards: Rock Town founder and award winning producer-singer, Frank Edwards has also suffered some bits of controversies in the time past, with some sets of people attacking the singer for having a particular haircut in 2020. This generated a lot of social media mentions and attacks.

Nosa: Nosa has over the years been one of the controversial about the choice of people choosing to refer to him with the tag “gospel singer”. The Salt Music artiste was signed to one of Nigeria’s premier record label, Chocolate City with the likes of MI, Ice Prince among the top guns in the label.

Despite being one of the most respected worshipper, the speaker has often reject the claims of being named as a gospel artiste as he often doesn’t want to be caged in that genre and would prefer being referred to as a musician.
